HIP-HOP: Beyond Beats and Rhymes takes an in-depth look at representations of manhood, sexism and homophobia in hip-hop culture. This groundbreaking documentary is a “loving critique” of certain disturbing developments in rap music culture from the point of view of a fan who challenges the art form’s representations of masculinity. Leading rap and hip-hop artists including Mos Def, Busta Rhymes, Russell Simmons are interviewed—and pressed—to answer some difficult questions about the violent and sexually explicit content of many hip-hop songs and videos.

man this was definitely the truth. black men in our society are feared by other cultures because of wat they see on t.v. it sad that this is the way we're portrayed, but just because corporations put that stuff out it doesnt mean we have to conform to it. at the end of the day God blessed us with a mind of our own use it and stop thinkin you have to be everything you might hear on the radio or see on the t.v.!!!!!!

this video was definitely the truth and make me think about and analyze media that i watch everyday. even though i've always disagreed with most of the lyrics in hip hop songs it was very interesting to hear views from people who on the streets, because these are the consumers that buy this garbage everyday. i must say, yes i listen to jadakiss, 50 cent, nelly, snoop dogg, etc i try not to pay attention to the lyrics and just focus on the beat because in most songs i can not relate to their life style. it was sad to see how every male hip hop artist only talk about killing and having sex with women in almost every song. this trend will only continue, because rappers are getting younger and younger and subjecting themselves to the white man for the fame and money. we wonder why everytime we watch the news all we hear are young males dieing we have to sit and think about whats going on outside the home. a mother and father can only partially teach their child how to behave and how to treat a woman, but when they go to school, watch television, listen to the radio, and watch movies, all they hear and see are negative images. the white men who put these images out for the world to see are laughing at our race because we have know respect for ourselves. children can't distinguish negative media from positive so their going to consume all these images and take in these lyrics and think thats the why life is suppose to be like. i think things will only get worse especially in hip hop because everybody wants to be RICH and most will even sell there soul.
